Refined palm oil, primarily known as Refined, Bleached, and Deodorized (RBD) palm oil, is a versatile, light-colored, odorless, and flavorless vegetable oil widely used across the food, cosmetic, and biofuel industries. The refining process removes impurities, pigments, and odors from the raw crude palm oil to produce a stable and consistent product.

Small-scale palm oil refining machines, typically with capacities of 1 to 10 tons per day, are available in a “batch” configuration suitable for mini or small scale palm oil processing plant. They are designed to produce high-quality edible refined palm oil (RBD oil).

Palm Oil Refining Processes

The small-scale refining process generally involves four core steps to remove impurities, odors, and colors from crude palm oil:
Degumming: Phosphoric acid or hot water is added to the crude oil to coagulate and remove gummy substances like phospholipids.
Deacidification (Neutralization): An alkaline solution (e.g., sodium hydroxide) is added to neutralize free fatty acids (FFAs), which are then separated as soapstock.
Decolorization (Bleaching): The oil is treated with activated clay or carbon under vacuum to adsorb pigments and other impurities, which are then removed via filtration.
Deodorization: High-temperature steam is injected into the oil under high vacuum to strip away unpleasant odors and volatile compounds, resulting in a bland, stable oil.

Main equipment in small scale palm oil refining machine:

Refining pot: to remove gum and impurities from crude oil, and using alkali to neutralize acid inside crude oil
Decolorization pot: To move the pigment in the oil.
Deodorization pot: To move the bad smells in the cooking oil.
Conductive oil stove: It is used to provide the heat for the whole batch type cooking oil refinery plant process.
Vacuum pump: The function of batch type cooking oil refinery plant is to provide vacuum for decolorization and deodorization.
Air compressor: It will dry the white clay after absorb the pigment in the oil.
Steam generator: To generate the steam for the deodorization pot.

This batch palm oil refining line of an oil refinery is perfect as a mini or small-scale palm oil mill plant. It requires low investment capital and a smaller occupation of land. You are able to refine almost every type of crude edible oil. The primary refinery process includes three stages which are de-gumming, neutralizing, bleaching, and deodorizing. This process eliminates all the impurities which make the oil inedible. The refining process also includes making the oil palatable and rancid-resistant if and when it is stored for long periods of time. Batch oil refining holds a capacity of 1TPT to 10TPD.
