Palm Kernel Pre-treatment Process

Pretreatment is necessary for efficient oil extraction from raw palm kernel. In palm kernel oil industrial production, oil raw materials are usually palm kernel or pressed cake. If the material is palm kernel, the main pretreating steps are palm nut cleaning, shelling and separation, crushing, flaking and steamed frying.

Palm Nut Cleaning

The raw palm nut's impurity should be cleaned firstly otherwise it would cause damage to the screw press machine. The magnetic selector is installed for removing metal debris, while the vibrating sieve is used for removal of sand, fines or other undesirable impurities. And the stones could be removed by gravity stoner.

Palm Nut Shelling and Separation

Since palm kernels are encased in a hard shell, the cracking process breaks the shells, allowing the seeds to be separated for oil extraction.Specialized high-efficiency palm kernel shelling machines separate the kernels from the shells to ensure only kernels are processed.

Crushing

Since palm kernel is relatively large and hard, in order to better improve the oil yield, the palm kernel needs to be secondary crushing after husking. The main crushing equipment is rolling crusher, which can break kernels into small pieces and easy to produce oil. It has a simple structure, stable performance and easy to operate.

Flaking

Flaking machine is mainly made up of two or more opposite rotating rolls (high nickel chrome molybdenum alloy). When the kernel pieces are in the middle of the two rollers, they are squeezed by instantaneous pressure to form flakes, meanwhile, the crude oil is rolled out firstly.

Steamed cooking

The purpose of steamed cooking is to completely destroy the oil cells by high temperature and moisture, so that the protein is denatured, the oil is steamed out and collected, the viscosity and the surface tension of the oil are reduced, the elasticity and plasticity of the material are adjusted, and the enzymes are passivated. Steamed cooking equipment is a steam frying pan, which can process the raw palm kernel flakes into matured flakes by heating, spraying and steaming.

Palm Kernel Oil Pressing

Mechanical Pressing: After pre-treatment, kernels are fed into palm kernel screw press machines that apply high pressure to extract crude palm kernel oil (CPKO). Mechanical pressing can typically extract up to 45-50% of the oil content. Equipped with the automatic temperature-controlling device and crude oil filter tank, Our integrated screw oil press operates easily and has high oil output. After pressing, the crude palm kernel oil is filtered through the filter cloth and stored in tanks temporarily. The specially designed feeder ensures the feeding is continuous and average, thus the pressing process is smooth and efficient.
Heating: Some systems employ heat to improve oil extraction efficiency, making the process smoother and increasing the yield. Heating also helps reduce the oil's viscosity, easing its flow.
Continuous Pressing: In large Palm Kernel Oil production lines, continuous pressing is used to increase the amount of oil extracted. This step may also include a secondary press to further extract oil from the residual cake.

Solvent extraction system

Solvent (often hexane) is used to dissolve and separate the oil remaining in the press cake. This method increases yield, especially for high-capacity plants.

    D.T.D.C means desolventizer, toaster, dryer and cooler, which is mainly used to separate the solvents from the wet meal, then the dried meal will be sent to meal silo for storage.

Dry Fractionation: This process crystallizes the oil without chemicals, followed by filtration to separate solid and liquid components. The dry fractionation method is cost-effective and ideal for high-purity olein.
Solvent Fractionation: Uses a solvent to improve the separation of olein and stearin, producing a high-quality product with higher purity.

The process of palm kernel oil expeller line;
1.Palm kernel cleaning :It is used for removing the iron impurities, stone, fiber and others. These impurities are bad for machines, especially for the palm kernel oil expeller.
2.Palm kernel crushing:because the palm kernel is hard and big size, it is required to crush to smaller and even pieces.
3.Palm kernel and shell separation. After crushing, the palm kernel is easily to separate.
4.Palm kernel drying. Fresh kernel contains 20% moisture. Palm kernel has no mildew during transportation and storage while moisture drops below 7%.
5.Cooking section: It is used for heating and cooking the crushing materials, to make it be suitable for pressing, doing like this can help final user get the maximum oil and good quality cakes.
6.Palm kernel oil pressing. Palm kernel oil pressing processing line is simple with usual oil seeds. The pre-pressing in oil pressing machine line can obtain 1/4 palm kernel oil, and residual oil need twice pressing.
7.Palm kernel filtering section: after pressing, there are some oil dregs in the crude oil, after clarifying, we need to filter the crude oil to avoid impurities in advance before refining process.

The palm kernel oil production line typically includes pre-treatment (cleaning, drying, and crushing), shell and kernel separation, palm kernel oil pressing or solvent extraction, crude palm oil clarification, and refining to ensure a high-quality oil output.

Both physical and chemical refining methods can be used. Chemical refining is typically preferred for higher Free Fatty Acid (FFA) oils, while physical refining is suited to lower FFA oils.

In addition to the flesh of palm fruit, palm kernels also contain oil. The oil content of palm kernel is about 50%, which can be extracted by pressing. Palm kernel processing plant has small workshops and medium and large factory. Compared to small scale plant, medium and large plant has a complete palm kernel oil production line.

The solvent extraction process is ideal for achieving a higher oil yield from palm kernels. It allows for the recovery of nearly all remaining oil after mechanical pressing, making it more efficient, especially for larger palm kernel oil production lines focused on maximizing output.
